Terms

What this is, and what it is not.

The short version: we do arithmetic on the details you give us and show our working. It is not an appraisal, not authentication, not investment advice, and the decision stays yours.

What ObiFID does

You send us a watch listing. We return an assessment: what it would cost to acquire, what any work would cost, what comparable examples have cleared at, how long an exit typically takes, and the arithmetic for each path you could take. Figures are ranges with a stated confidence, because that is what the evidence supports.

We are an analytics service. We do not buy, sell, broker, consign, authenticate, repair, insure or hold watches, and we take no commission or fee from anyone on either side of a transaction you make.

What an assessment is not

Not an appraisal

Insurance, probate, tax and legal valuations require a qualified appraiser and a signed document. We are neither, and an assessment must not be presented as one. We are happy to give an appraiser the underlying evidence; the appraisal remains theirs.

Not authentication

Nothing can be authenticated from photographs and a description. Where we flag a risk, it is a prompt to look harder, never a finding. An assessment that raises no flags is not a statement that a watch is genuine, and it does not replace an in-person inspection by someone competent to give one.

Not investment advice

We are not financial advisers, we are not registered as such, and nothing we send is a recommendation to buy, sell or hold anything. Watches are not securities and they are not an investment product. Prices fall as well as rise, and many watches never recover what was paid for them.

Not a forecast

We describe what is observable now. We do not predict where prices are going, and any figure describing a future outcome is a scenario computed from assumptions you can see and change, not a projection of what will happen.

Accuracy, and its limits

An assessment is only as good as what you tell us and what the market has revealed. We work from the details you supply, and we cannot see the watch. Condition described optimistically produces an optimistic answer. Thin transaction evidence produces a wide range, and we say so rather than narrowing it for comfort.

We take care, but we do not guarantee that any figure is correct. Use it as one input to your own judgement. The decision to buy, sell, service or walk away is yours, and so is the outcome.

What you send us

By submitting a listing you confirm you are entitled to share the details you are sharing, and you grant us permission to use them to produce your assessment and, in aggregate with others, to improve the service. You keep whatever rights you hold in the material.

Please do not send copyrighted photographs belonging to someone else, other people's personal information, or anything confidential. We store the fields you enter, not the listing page itself.

We may decline any submission, and we may stop offering assessments at any time.

This site

The text, design and analysis on this site are ours. You are welcome to quote from it with attribution and a link. You may not copy it wholesale, scrape it, or use it to train a model without asking first.

Where we cite an auction result, a retail price, or a manufacturer's figure, we cite the source. Those facts belong to whoever published them.

Conflicts

If our situation changes such that we hold, trade or have an interest in watches we also write about, we will say so plainly and prominently rather than leaving you to work it out. Independence is the only thing that makes an assessment worth reading.

Liability

ObiFID is provided as it is, without warranty. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of an assessment or this site, including money lost on a transaction. If liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us, which is currently nothing.

Nothing here limits liability for fraud or for anything that cannot lawfully be limited.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, and the courts there have jurisdiction over any dispute.

Changes

We may update these terms. The date below shows when they last changed, and continuing to use the site after that means you accept the revision.
